Label Focus #1 - Chequered Wax
Manchester-based independent record label and party starters Chequered Wax have been making waves in the local scene as of late, with parties across the city as well as 3 releases pushing up-and-coming house, techno + disco-oriented talent.
Their ethos of pushing up-and-coming artists is reflected not just in their back catalogue of releases, but through their bookings too – young, exciting names take the lead. This week they launched their bi-weekly residency at Manchester’s Off the Square, and have their next label night on Oct 15th.
The label has seen 3 various artist releases since its inception – the first a set of funky, atmospheric house cuts, the second more focussed on sample-driven disco edits, and the latest has a more spaced out, trancey approach.
Olivier Verhaeghe’s opening track ‘Geometry’ off the latest release is a wicked slice of shuffly, dubby tech house, with spaced out pads and an infectious funky bassline.
Another highlight is Matheson’s ‘Post X’, a subdued, breaks driven euphoric cut, lifted up by atmospheric gated trance synths. While all grounded in house and techno, the musical diversity of their releases is a testament to their broad music policy, with house / electro / breaks / techno + acid all cited as genres you can hear at their nights.
For such a young label (all three releases have been put out in the last 6 months), Chequered Wax are definitely ones to watch.
