Foodhall plan to launch community radio station
Foodhall is an open public dining room, events space, and DIY, not-for-profit venue that is run on values of community and inclusivity. Operating as a pay-what-you-feel cafe in the week, Foodhall offers communal meals with intercepted products doomed for waste, tackling social isolation through shared eating and encouraging integration across barriers.
The space also functions as a great hub for underground music and art, hosting regular club nights, DJs and bands (under the Friday Lates programme), as well as exhibitions and talks. Given Foodhall’s unparalleled contributions to the DIY scene here, it’s no surprise that plans for a Foodhall Community Radio station (FCR) are currently in motion.
With plans to be an accessible platform with balanced, diverse programming and a space for more than just music (talks, interviews, politics and more), it’s looking like a welcome addition to the Sheffield arts scene. With underground radio flourishing elsewhere (with plenty of stations in London, Manchester, Bristol, etc.) there’s undeniably a space for more in Sheffield, with a brilliant community of like-minded artists, musicians and promoters to be platformed.
To help raise funds for this venture, the Airworks 1st Birthday party is acting as a fundraiser with all profits going towards FCR - there’s a suggested donation of £7 on the door, but in keeping with Foodhall’s consistent policies of inclusivity no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
