West Ghanaian-inspired trio, Vula Viel, head to Yellow Arch

1 April 2019

Polyrhythmic extraordinaires Vula Viel will bring their hypnotic rhythms and incendiary live show to Yellow Arch Studios this Thursday. After a successful set at the Lescar in May 2018, the band are set to return to the Steel City to promote January’s LP ‘Do Not Be Afraid’.

Bex Birch, bandleader and gyil player for Vula Viel, formed the group after a life-changing three-year stint living, farming and studying with xylophone master Thomas Sekgura in Upper West Ghana. Upon her return, Bex decided to incorporate her knowledge of the traditional Ghanian Dagaree systems with her classical training as a percussionist, creating a unique fusion that has been described as ‘Ghanian minimalism’.

The band have since gathered a number of high profile followers, and can now count proto-punk messiah Iggy Pop among their fans.
