Bristol's iconic Thekla club marks 35 year anniversary with Lone, Pangaea and more

25 April 2019

This weekend will mark 35 years since the boat-cum-venue first opened its doors under the original name ‘The Old Profanity Showboat’. Following the massive lineup topped by Lone and Pangaea hosted the 3rd May, Bristol badman Roni Size will be rounding the celebrations with an extended 3hr set on the 5th.

Nottingham producer Lone will bring the Friday’s celebrations to a climax, showcasing his eclectic mix of jungle, house and old-school hip hop. With a career that spans over 12 years, the producer’s favoured combination of hard-hitting beats and nostalgic, dreamlike soundscapes recalls Boards of Canada and early Aphex Twin. London-based producer Pangaea, who makes up one third of the Hessle Audio crew, will also appear on the bill. With releases from jungle to house to techno, the DJ brings ‘a rare understanding of modern club music to his sets.’ Pangaea’s progression as an artist, repeatedly defying boundaries and classifications, has gone hand-in-hand with the evolution his label has undergone over the last 12 years of its existence.

Also joining the bill will be Sheffield-based collective Denham Audio, who gained a foothold on the scene after the release of their collaborative cassette tape 'Club Glow Vol 1' with Borai.

Bristol legend Roni Size will close the celebrations on the 5th May. Size, real name Ryan Owen Granville Williams, is arguably one of the most well-respected drum and bass artists the country has ever seen, with production credits spanning dozens of labels, projects, and releases, 'New Form' being considered as "a masterpiece with a beautiful problem" according to RA, and " the only truly great drum'n'bass album" by some others. The DJ will be performing an extended 3 hour set alongside Dynamite MC until the early hours of Monday morning. The Insiders will also appear on the bill alongside vocalist Collette Warren, who has recently launched her debut EP.
