BBC 6 Music celebrate Metalheadz anniversary
BBC 6 Music will host a day dedicated to Drum and Bass today in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of hugely influential D’n’B label Metalheadz. The label, formed in 1994 as a collaboration between genre pioneers DJ Kemistry, Goldie and Storm, has gone on to become an unstoppable force in UK electronic music.
Label head DJ Storm and Rupture promoter DJ Mantra will join Mary Ann Hobbs in the morning of the 7th June, to offer a first-hand history of the era. Renowned 6 Music DJ, Steve Lamacq, has been counting down his ‘Drum n Bass world cup all week, with the winners set to be crowned from 4pm.
Goldie’s early experiences with the London rave scene heavily influenced him and the formation of the label. In a DJ Mag interview with Storm, she recalled taking Goldie to London nightclub Rage on the eve of Metalheadz’ foundation. She said: "The night Goldie really 'got it', we came back to our flat and he said 'right, I want to make this music, you’ll be the DJs, we’ll have a label and a club, we’ll make some t-shirts'. That was our dream and that dream became the Metalheadz label.”
The label’s current roster continues to impress, boasting artists such as Source Direct, Lenzman, Photek and Dillinja.
