Free music workshops for girls and young women in Kirklees
This summer, the University Of Huddersfield’s Music Department are teaming up with the Yorkshire Sound Women Network to deliver a series of music production workshops for girls and young women (including transgender, and non-binary young people) in Kirklees, West Yorkshire.
The free Go Compose workshops, which require no prior musical experience to attend, will begin on the 6th of July and run for 6 weekends over the summer holidays. Each session will focus on a specific topic, from core DJ skills to Sound Design and electronic composition and production.
The workshop series provides yet another good example of proactive action being taken to encourage and support young women to learn about electronic music, get creative and enjoy themselves in a safe space. Recent years have seen many similar initiatives pop up, all helping to address the deep-seated gender imbalances still prevalent in electronic music and DJ culture (check out our recent features on Sisu’s DJ workshops, and the GRL night in Sheffield).
