MIK ARTISTIK’S EGO TRIP
Three very different individuals just doing what they do. Playing great music which not only makes people laugh, but can move them to tears or ecstasy. Trying to explain the energy and imagination of the band in a few words is nigh-on impossible, and their live gigs offer something special every time you have the pleasure of experiencing them.
"We don't change the set at all based on where we are. People get into it wherever, Cornwall, Ireland, Doncaster, wherever. Sometimes I do slip into a bit of freeform rambling though - we once played the same song for 45 minutes, so it can vary. The music seems to hit all generations, people come and tell me that the kids have knackered their CD from playing it too much."
FRANZ VON (K.O.G. and the Zongo Brigade)
K.O.G offer the interpretation of genuine African music fused with energy and laced with funk reggae jazz and music from all corners of the world. Their Emcee/rapper, Franz Von, offers straight up gully talk delivered with raw passion, he can spit no doubt...
SHEFFIELD SAMBA BAND
The Sheffield Samba Band is a non profit organisation that runs on a voluntary basis. From their unmissable presence at local lantern processions, outdoor dance events, festivals and carnivals (of course!) to owning the stage in pubs and clubs, Sheffield Samba Band have been spreading the love for their unique party-mad samba style on the Sheffield music scene and beyond. In short, they’re very pink, very loud and madder than a bag of ferrets!
BONGO BERT & SOFIA
Ex-percussionist from Reverend and the Makers and lead singer of Bongo and the Soul Jar, Bongo Bert teams up with Sofia Vago, an amazing young up-and-coming vocalist who is set to be a star and their friend Ilodica, a master of the melodica who has worked with esteemed reggae artists such as Mad Professor, Iration Steppas, The Disciples and Alpha & Omega to bring you an exclusive dub reggae set especially for this event!
Fuzzy Jones is an award winning singer-songwriter and the queen of Junk Shop Folk based in Leeds, UK. She conjures up vivid urban tales of the everyday and her lyrics draw you in around melamine tables, of kitsch faded orange cafes. Fuzzy is emerging as a new and unique alt-folk, chamber pop artist. It has been said that “the sweetness of her voice brings some peace of mind and her bunch of witty songs, about wrecked relationships are softly sharp, softly accurate, and simply classy.” One young person recently described her music as “a pillow my soul would like to hug.” Miss Jones herself likes to describe her music as “a tea party with Joni Mitchell and David Bowie, where Burt Bacharach occasionally pops by for a coffee”. She is often accompanied onstage by Jonny Flockton; a very handy guitarist and Handmade Fletch; a vivacious bass man, who have both helped shaped her songs into beautiful arrangements.
20FT SQUID BLUES BAND
The beloved 20ft Squid Blues Band from Sheffield play a fine selection of blues and Americana.
THE SETTE OF ODDE VOLUMES
The Sette of Odde Volumes are a three piece band based in the Peak District. Specialising in laid back songs from the swing era, popular classics performed in their own inimitable style, and an ever expanding repertoire of curiously odd originals!
THE DIRTY BRASSTARDS
An offshoot of the award winning Sheffield University Brass Band, providing the right atmosphere for dancing on tables with their New Orleans and funk style.
Sheffield Folk - Yorkshire Unplugged Winner 2013. From Birmingham and living in Sheffield, Kid Conventional’s sets dazzle with his impressive array of vocal and song-writing talents.
Forefathers are a high energy Afro-Funk outfit from Sheffield. The lively ensemble formed late 2015, immediately playing sell-out shows across the UK. They combine world music such as Afro-Beat and Salsa with a healthy dash of Jazz and Funk-Rock.
Tony Lambert is a songwriter, guitar player and singer from Leeds.
He is passionate about his human expression through the songs he composes. His songs are often dark and challenging lyrically and yet there is sometimes a lightness and a joy in their composition. Tony describes music as his way of showing, and allowing people to see what it feels like to look at the world the way he does. And that isn’t always pretty.
This year Tony has begun building an audience again after a long lay off, just recently playing alongside folk legend Rab Noakes. He is gearing up for a busy summer, heading to a string of festivals, including Latitude, Green Man and Wilderness.
Captain Avery and the Cosmic Triceratops of Intergalactic Peace play music from beyond the space-time apocalypse of the keening moment, doing an acoustic afrojazz tropicalic psych-grunge set especially for the event!
A tireless DJ and producer as well as a true originator, Winston Hazel helped gift house music to the city via his mid-eighties parties that pitched new American dance sounds up against his beloved funk, jazz and soul. It was an irresistible concoction, and from these early innovations grew a city-centric dance industry that continues to echo – and still has Winston at its heart. He's deejayed round the world and recorded for an array of quality labels, but his dedication to the dance-floor burns as fiercely as ever.
HOT DIAMOND ACES (DJ set)
Whether you're b-boys, soul sisters, jazz-heads or funk brothers, Hot Diamond Aces will make you happy in one way or another. They’re guaranteed to tear the roof off the venue with their DJ set accompanied with live percussion.
Taking over the back room for some night time rump-shaking, Kompression play funk, disco and reggae alongside some deeper dance tunes as the night progresses.
A mysterious figure on the DJ scene, occasionally venturing off his ship, Th’ Captain has spun tunes in various Sheffield venues such as The Forum, Ski Village and The Great Gatsby. Currently focused on civil disobedience, Th’ Captain has committed himself to play soul, funk, reggae and indie protest songs interspersed with cut-and-paste samples to portray his disgust at individuals in power.
What do we hear when we listen to sound? What could we see? What would it mean to us? How do we construct this meaning? All these questions will be answered via the visuals specifically created for this event by video artist Zaron Mizmeras.
PRS have kindly offered this event 100% off their usual charge. PRS for Music licences the use of copyright music across the UK, giving businesses and organisations the legal permission they need to play the music they want.
These licences ensure that music publishers, songwriters and composers are fairly rewarded with royalties so they can keep making music - and mean that we’re able to support music at events like this.
