In partnership with the British Council, #SupportYemen and Al Madaniya Magazine...
Sarha Collective & The People's Film Club are proud to present 'This is Yemen': a one night mini-festival celebrating the Yemeni filmmaking collective, Comra Films (أفلام قُمرة). Join us from 7pm for authentic Yemeni cuisine (and Redon's authentic pints), and after for the best of vintage and modern Yemeni records until late.
Our event will premiere groundbreaking shorts produced during the British Council and #SupportYemen’s filmmaking camp in Sana’a, introducing audiences in the UK to fresh perspectives from the heart of Yemen.
Comra قمرة is the Arabic term for a photographic dark room, named by scientist Ibn Al Haytham who discovered that he could develop photos using a tiny hole in a darkened space. The collective takes its name from the situation in Yemen, which in its present state resembles a dark room.
Comra Films is made up of Yemen’s most established, award-winning filmmakers - from experienced fixers to Oscar nominated directors. Their dream is “to foster Yemen's culture in the most challenging of times and preserve the essence of its past and present through film”.
Paul Hughes-Smith, a former BBC producer, has been collecting recordings of Yemeni music and bringing over a number of Yemeni traditional groups of musicians to the UK since 2001. He worked for several years with the arts Charity Cultural Co-operation who hosted the Music Village Festival every 2 years in London.
For one night only he will present songs of love, longing, separation and celebration. Male and female singers from both commercial recordings and personal recordings will feature from different areas of the country: Sana’a, Taiz in the North and Aden, Lahej and the Hadhramaut in the South. The traditional accompaniment is usually the Arabic lute, the ‘ud, with percussion, the goblet drum, darabukka, tambourine, riqq, together with some other drums in the South such as mirwas and haajir. Occasionally you might hear the qanun, a trapezoidal zither, the simsimiyya, the plucked lyre,or the mizmar, a double reed wind instrument like a shawm.
We will also be playing amazing new mixes of vintage and modern Yemeni records until the end of the night.
THIS IS YEMEN is a collaboration between Sarha Collective and The People's Film Club. Sarha Collective works to showcase unheard perspectives from the Arab world. The People's Film Club works to screen brilliant films, to encourage discussions and raise funds for grassroots organisations.
The proceeds from this event will go towards supporting an upcoming Yemeni theatre production which will open April next year at Battersea Arts Centre, the details of which will be announced shortly. We can’t wait to share this with you all!
