Beginners Drum Workshop
DIY Space for London, London
Sunday, 16 Feb 2020
13:00 – 15:00
Join the dance-party-drum-punk beast of beats that is Charismatic Megafauna (First Timers 2015 graduates) for a percussion workshop based around our own home-brewed multi-limbed megafaunic method.
There are a bunch of great tutorials online for how to build up basic drum beats, so this is not that – we want to guide and give you confidence to find your own way with drums and percussion, to embrace public learning, try out ensemble drumming, and find the drums in your body. We’ll be using rhythm as melody and feeling out beats-led music making, while honouring, bashing and disrupting the drum kit.
Suitable for complete beginners as well as people who have a bit of experience messing about on the drums!
There are 20 places for this workshop. Book a place in advance to avoid disappointment! (Ticket Link: TBC )Tickets are £5 (+booking fee). We aim to make our workshops accessible as possible, so if you would like to come but cannot afford the ticket price you can reserve a place by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
❤ About First Timers ❤
FTF is a season of workshops followed by a two-day festival where every band plays its first show. FTF is about getting new faces and voices in bands, and doing something about the lack of diversity in the make-up of the DIY music community.
As a direct way of addressing the lack of diversity in the make-up of the DIY music community, our workshops centre people who are disabled (visible or non-visible), LGBTQIA+ folk, people of colour, and women. As well, we are here to support people who have never played in a band before // never played the instrument they've always wanted to learn before because of their class, race, gender, mental health, etc.
Our 2020 festival will be taking place on May 2nd & 3rd 2020. Applications from new bands to play are open:

💖 About the venue, DIY Space for London 💖
DIY Space for London is on a single floor level, with access ramps, widened doors, an accessible toilet and plenty of space for manoeuvring and getting away from crowds. There is plenty of seating available and the toilets are gender neutral and accessible.
On entering the venue there is a small ramp, which is quite steep and might require assistance going up and down. If you are a wheelchair user and not travelling with anyone, let us know in advance you are coming so someone at the venue can be there to assist.
