What to bring: if you have an instrument you usually work with you can bring along your guitar, keyboard, bass guitar or Ukelale.

Ishani from @breakuphaircut from first timers 2019 will be teachin Songwriting for Punx as part of First Timers Fast 2020 series of workshops. A crash course in basic chords, majors and minors, chord progressions your fav bands probably use, and how you use chord progressions to make it easier to write a song. This is a guitar focused workshop but feel free to bring along another instrument if you usually work with something else. Some low pressure lyric writing will also be looked at.

Ishani wrote songs in her bedroom before Breakup Haircut, where she joined the First Timers team. She also plays in and for several other bands, teaches music and runs therapeutic musical sessions in hospitals, and volunteers with Girls Rock London.

FTF is a season of workshops followed by a two-day festival where every band plays its first show. FTF is about getting new faces and voices in bands, and doing something about the lack of diversity in the make-up of the DIY music community.

As a direct way of addressing the lack of diversity in the make-up of the DIY music community, our workshops centre people who are disabled (visible or non-visible), LGBTQIA+ folk, people of colour, and women. As well, we are here to support people who have never played in a band before // never played the instrument they've always wanted to learn before because of their class, race, gender, mental health, etc.

Our 2020 festival will be taking place on May 2nd & 3rd 2020. Applications from new bands to play are open:

💖 About the venue, DIY Space for London 💖

DIY Space for London is on a single floor level, with access ramps, widened doors, an accessible toilet and plenty of space for manoeuvring and getting away from crowds. There is plenty of seating available and the toilets are gender neutral and accessible.

On entering the venue there is a small ramp, which is quite steep and might require assistance going up and down. If you are a wheelchair user and not travelling with anyone, let us know in advance you are coming so someone at the venue can be there to assist.

DIY Space has an Access Group that is always working to improve accessibility. Most recently it worked towards making DIY Space For London the UK’s first volunteer-run venue to achieve Bronze status on the Charter of Best Practice from Attitude Is Everything – a charity that improves Deaf and disabled people’s access to live music.
